Generative AI Essentials:
Preparing Teachers for the Future of Education
Preparing Teachers for the Future of Education
In my current position as an Instructional Coach for Buncombe County Schools, I have engaged in multiple professional development opportunities related to Generative AI. This extensive experience has situated me as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on GenAI in education. As such, I am a key member of the team tasked to create and deliver in-person training on GenAI to the 1,650 teachers in our county.
I leveraged the background and planning work from that in-person training, my content knowledge of GenAI, my insight into the needs of teachers, and my understanding of adult learning principles to create the Articulate Rise 360 course below. Embedded within this course is an interactive created with Articulate Storyline 360 and a how-to-prompt video created and edited with Camtasia; both are linked individually below.
Planning document
When designing the in-person training on GenAI, my team spent months in the planning, creating, and revising stages. We analyzed stakeholder needs, scoured source documents, determined key learning objectives, and incorporated active adult learning techniques into our presentation. I selected target audience members to test our product, reviewed relevant feedback, and adapted our training materials as needed.
The planning document linked here shows how I utilized that knowledge to generate a similar Rise course for asynchronous learning.
Articulate Rise 360
Audience: K-12 classroom teachers, school administrators, school counselors, and other certified staff
View the course: (and provide feedback, optional) https://360.articulate.com/review/content/913f16ff-bd2f-4daa-bf05-58a149b453ff/review
The problem solved: School staff have varying knowledge of GenAI usage in the classroom, but within a district, all must have the same basic understanding of critical concepts. In-person trainings require extensive time commitments and may result in unequal coverage of key topics. A standardized online training ensures all participants receive the same information, which they are able to consume at their own pace.
Tools used: Articulate Rise, Articulate Storyline, Camtasia, GenerativeAI (ChatGPT and AI within Rise)

Articulate Storyline 360
Embedded within the Rise course, this short scenario depicts a conversation between two teachers with varying AI skills. This branching scenario provides users with choices based on their own needs.
Based on peer feedback, the initial iteration of this scenario was revised in the following ways:
Addition of an introductory AI-powered voice-over to help provide context for the scenario
Alteration of timing for speech bubble appearance
Creation of loops, allowing viewers to explore multiple pathways
Revision of text for clarity
Camtasia
Many of the target audience members for this training are completely new to utilizing GenAI in their work. I created this short, just-in-time learning video to teach the most important skill they need to acquire: composing valuable prompts. This video dissects the CRAFT method of prompting, as described by Vera Cubero at NC Department of Instruction.
